The Kingdom of the Netherlands with capital city Amsterdam is an independent state that won its respected status by joining the most important world’s organizations such as Benelux(Netherlands was one of that states who encouraged the establishment of the Benelux),The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the EEC,which lead to the European Union we know today.
The flag of Netherlands was first introduced in 1572 and was recognized as the official flag of both Netherlands and The Kindgdom of Netherlands after 1937.The flag is composed from tree colored bands,each one of the same size,red on top,white in the middle and blue on the bottom.The first flag of the Dutch Republic was also a horizontal tricolor,but this time instead of red it was orange,as a gratitude for William I of Orange,the one who helped Netherlads win its independence in the war with Spain.The flag was then called “Princeflag” in the honor of Prince William.Because the orange colour had the tendency to turn into red at a certain point everyone has decided that red should be the colour to replace orange on the Netherlands flag.Until 1937,when this version become the official one,the red and orange colours were equally used to represent the flag and often they were both seen on the rooftops of the building in Netherlands.When Netherlands was acquired by France it wasn’t allowed that people use the name “Princeflag” again,but the colours,their form and disposal on the flag suffered no changes.Along with the time and with the leaders that came to power the Netherlands flag was slightly modified with certain figures put on one of the tree colours,but it remained after all to the main look: a tricolor flag,with red,white and blue horizontal divisions.
There are certain flags that are very alike Netherlands flag,like the flag of France,Croatia,Luxembourg,Paraguay,State of Slovenes,Croats, and Serbs or the flag of Yugoslavia.All these flags have the same colours but they are disposed in different shapes and sizes.If you go to Netherlands you can see their flag displayed on top of the important buildings like the military basis or the buildings of the government.On the days when a the national holiday of Netherlands is been celebrated the flag can be used to be displayed on any house.The Kingdom of Netherlands is composed of Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.There were 3 components until 1975 when Suriname chose its independence.Those two countries have their own national flag,but the flag of Netherlands is known as official.
